The lower leg, ankle and foot are exposed to substantial mechanical demands, particularly in athletic populations. Conditions affecting this region range from acute muscle and ligament injuries to chronic tendon and overuse conditions.

The Lower Leg, Ankle & Foot Series provides clinicians with a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for assessing and managing common conditions affecting the lower leg, ankle and foot.

Across seven courses, the series explores the anatomy, biomechanics, epidemiology, aetiology, clinical presentation and management of common conditions including in this region.

The series focuses on developing clinical reasoning, improving diagnostic accuracy and enhancing evidence-based management of commonly encountered conditions in MSK practice. 

Emphasis is placed on practical application, equipping clinicians with structured approaches to clinical assessment, differential diagnosis, management planning and rehabilitation progression. 

Together, these courses provide a comprehensive framework for improving the assessment, diagnosis, management and rehabilitation of common conditions affecting the lower leg, ankle and foot across clinical and athletic populations.

What Will You Learn?

  • Understand the relevant anatomy and biomechanics of the Achilles tendon, calf, ankle, foot and midfoot.
  • Understand the epidemiology, aetiology and pathophysiology of common lower leg, ankle and foot conditions.
  • Recognise the clinical features and presentation of common injuries in the region
  • Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments of common lower leg, ankle and foot presentations.
  • Apply structured diagnostic processes to acute muscle injuries, overuse conditions and complex foot and ankle presentations.
  • Develop differential diagnoses for common presentations including Achilles region pain, lower leg pain, heel pain, posterior lower leg pain and midfoot pain.
  • Identify the structural causes and classifications relevant to conditions such as posterior ankle impingement and acute midfoot injuries.
  • Apply evidence-based management strategies for common lower leg, ankle and foot conditions.
  • Implement appropriate progressive loading and rehabilitation strategies for tendinopathies, muscle strains and other lower limb conditions.
  • Structure ankle rehabilitation across early, mid and late-stage recovery phases.
  • Develop strength, proprioception, neuromuscular control, agility and sport-specific capacity throughout rehabilitation.
  • Use objective criteria to guide rehabilitation progression and return-to-play decisions.
  • Identify and address risk factors for recurrent ankle injury and other persistent or recurrent conditions.
  • Apply clinical decision-making frameworks to guide the management of complex presentations and determine appropriate treatment pathways.
  • Support safe and confident return to activity and performance through appropriate rehabilitation progression and management planning.
